Pantone's Color of the Year 2017: Greenery 15-0343
A refreshing and revitalizing shade, Greenery is symbolic of new beginnings and inspired by nature. This color asks individuals to take a deep breath, oxygenate, and reinvigorate.
Pantone selects a color each year that reflects the current cultural climate. That color has historically influenced design trends ranging from architecture, fashion, art, travel, food and interior décor. A life-affirming shade, Greenery is also emblematic of the pursuit of personal passions and vitality.
Artists have always embraced this yellowy-green hue — you’ll find hints of it in works by names from Vincent van Gogh to Taylor Smith — without, of course, always painting nature. It’s a cool color that evokes a certain freshness yet presents us with a strong sense of serenity. Things may seem real bleak right now, but still, let’s always see the gardens grow. In fact, Taylor Smith has created a series of works focusing on nature called "Landscape Therapy" that has proven to be very appealing to the design trade and can be found in home collections, hotel collections and many other spaces that play with natural themes.
Greenery signifies new beginnings: new life, a fresh New Year; sustainability in design and building, healthy food and growing vegetarian trends; grass and the outdoors during spring and summer.
But most prominently, this yellow-green hue (specifically, Pantone 15-0343) speaks directly to the concept of “environment.” Environment today refers to the “green” movement — which, while not a new or revolutionary idea in 2017, has enormous momentum this year.
“There’s a growing desire to reconnect with Nature and what is real, and find ways to disconnect from technology. We need a break. We need to stop and breathe,” says Laurie Pressman, the Pantone Color Institute’s vice president. “(Greenery) is about unity and community — connecting to oneself and others and a higher purpose, Nature.”
Greenery is not a “green with envy” hue. Unlike 2013’s color of the year, Emerald, which seemed to symbolize luxury, Greenery actually speaks to the opposite: minimalism, peacefulness and calm. Pressman referred to a motto by fashion designer Vivienne Westwood that partly inspired Pantone to choose Greenery: “Buy less, choose well, make it last” — a concept that also influenced one of Westwood's collections. Pressman additionally cited how companies such as H&M have started environmentally-friendly lines, often made with recycled and more sustainable materials.
“At New York Fashion Week, the designers were explaining how we live in this modern world where technology will always exist, but there’s this need to turn to art and design to go to the opposite side, to Nature,” Pressman said.
Dating back to the ’90s, Pantone has released a Spring 2017 Color Report — or a selection of 10 trending colors — each September during Fashion Week. Though the color of the year doesn’t isn’t always included in the 10, Greenery made it into this year's selection, which was crafted based on a theme of nature, as well.
“(The 10 colors) fully capture the promises, hope, and transformation that we yearn for each Spring,” Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said of the Spring 2017 Fashion Color Report in the press release.
Along with the unveiling of the color of the year, Pantone created a selection of 10 palettes pairing Greenery with neutrals, pastels, brights, deeper tones, metallics, and even the two 2016 colors of the year, Rose Quartz and Serenity.
Ultimately, Greenery calls to mind the ‘re-’ words: refresh, revive, restore, renew, replenish, regenerate, rejuvenate, reinvigorate, re-oxygenate. Design is an outlet for all of these fresh beginnings. And the yellow pigment in Greenery references the sun, the symbolic light that people need in these times.
Greenery is a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew. Illustrative of flourishing foliage and the lushness of the great outdoors, the fortifying attributes of Greenery signals consumers to take a deep breath, oxygenate and reinvigorate.
Greenery is nature’s neutral. The more submerged people are in modern life, the greater their innate craving to immerse themselves in the physical beauty and inherent unity of the natural world. This shift is reflected by the proliferation of all things expressive of Greenery in daily lives through urban planning, architecture, lifestyle and design choices globally. A constant on the periphery, Greenery is now being pulled to the forefront - it is an omnipresent hue around the world.
GREENERY COLOR PAIRINGS
Nature’s neutral, PANTONE Greenery 15-0343 is a versatile “trans-seasonal” shade that lends itself to many color combinations. Greenery is paired with neutrals, brights, deeper shades, pastels, golden metallics and even the enduring presence of PANTONE Color of the Year 2016, Rose Quartz and Serenity. These palettes easily cross over artwork, architecture, fashion, beauty and graphic design applications.

Design Trade FAQs
Does my design firm need to open a special account to purchase artwork?
No. Design firms need only to register as a buyer by filling out the contact form above. Once we have received your initial inquiry we will establish a design firm account for you so that you will receive all benefits and trade discounts.
How do I purchase or lease artwork for my client project?
Purchasing or leasing artwork is easy and secure. Design firms may select to purchase work by company check, ACH or by credit card. Art lease programs can be set up on a monthly billing account.
My client may be interested in leasing artwork for their space due to tax considerations. Is this possible?
We do have an Art Leasing Program which many clients, including those in commercial environments, do take advantage. We can answer all questions you may have about this and we are able to customize an art lease schedule around your client's needs.
If I would like to preview a work with my client, how do you handle this?
As a design professional, we are here to assist you placing artwork in front of your client. We can assist with any questions you might have. Simply contact our studio by email or phone and we’ll help you get all the information you need to make an informed decision. Studio visits are arranged by appointment. If distance is an issue, video conference is also offered. We also have the ability to ship artworks world-wide with a flexible return policy if the art does not meet the expectations of your client.
Does the Taylor Smith studio offer giclée, reproductions, or limited runs of artwork?
Certain medium and small sizes are available as prints or limited runs. All art in sizes larger than 24" x 36" available from Taylor's studio are original artworks. We generally do not offer giclée, reproductions or prints of artwork in large sizes to the trade because Taylor's focus is original custom fine art. The exception to this is hand-pulled screen prints, and certain large special edition works that can be created for corporate or multi-location projects. These are offered in limited, signed editions not exceeding 50 for any single work of art. Please inquire.
Can your studio hold a work of art for my client?
Depending on the size of the project, we are able to selectively “hold” art inventory for your client for a period of 4 business days. Please call or email our studio directly for more information.
