“Brain Scan Sponsored By Chanel” - 2019 by contemporary artist Taylor Smith. Oil, enamel, transfer & gold leaf on panel
Taylor Smith’s starkly personal work, Brain Scan Sponsored By Chanel is a love letter to her mother who suffers from Parkinson’s Disease. Taylor Smith speaks to the very contemporary facts of life in 21st century America by referencing our healthcare crisis, technology, luxury designer goods, consumerism and our family relationships. Memory and the loss of our ability to categorize and reference basic blocks of our lives are contrasted with imagery of materialism and the things that become outsized to society. Which things have importance?
Smith appropriates source material from medical files, pop culture, her own family history, and the local shopping mall while using silk screen, enamel, precious metal leaf, ink and transfer as a means to mechanically fix these images in stark contrast to the designer labels and designer logos loved by consumers.
